Northern Plains and Rocky Mountain Consortium Green Jobs Conference

WHEN: April 19-20

WHERE: Des Moines, Iowa

“Going green” is transforming daily life at the local, national and global levels. For environmental protection, national security, job creation and other reasons, the world is evolving within and toward a greener economy. While green activities can easily be found  anywhere, determining the workforce ramifications is a much more complicated undertaking.

How Much Do We Know About Green Jobs?

While it’s clear that green jobs are becoming a vital part of the American economic landscape, it sometimes seems there are more questions than answers about the impact of new technologies.

  •  What are the new and emerging technologies in green energy?
  • How many people work in green jobs?
  • Are green skills different than non-green skills?
  • What skills are most important to employers?
  • Do newly hired employees have the skills employers need?
  • What’s happening in sustainable agriculture?
  • How has green training/retooling helped the unemployed?
  • What does green mean to economic development?

All of these topics will be addressed at The Northern Plains & Rocky Mountain Consortium: Researching the Green Economy Conference, April 19th & 20th in Des Moines, Iowa.  We look forward to seeing you there.

USDA Rural Development Holding Rural-Issues Listening Post in Newton

Bill Menner, USDA Rural Development State Director in Iowa, will be in Newton from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, April 18th to listen to local community and economic development leaders, as well as the general public, discuss issues and opportunities they encounter in their ongoing efforts to keep rural Iowa vibrant and prosperous.

The session will take place at Newton Development Corporation, 600 N. 2nd Ave. West, Room 264 (DMACC Newton campus) and is open to the public.

In the last 10 years, 66 of our state’s 99 counties have seen a population decline.  While rural communities and areas are home to 1.7 million Iowans, more than half of Iowa’s nearly 950 cities now have fewer than 500 residents.

USDA Rural Development currently administers and manages more than 40 housing, business and community infrastructure and facility loan and grant programs designed to improve the economic stability of rural communities, businesses, residents, farmers and ranchers and improve the quality of life in rural America.

During the past year the agency helped a record number of Iowans receive funding for economic development projects and quality of life improvements. The agency’s investment in Iowa helped create or retain more than 2,200 jobs, aided 2,500 families in buying their own homes and assisted more than 250 communities as they made improvements to their facilities, services and infrastructure.

What: Rural-Issues Listening Post – presented by USDA Rural Development
